Encryption is the process of “encoding” data, i.e. translating readable text, referred to as “plaintext,” into an illegible language known as “ciphertext.” The purpose of encryption is to protect digital information against hackers. Encryption uses an algorithm to create, as well as decode, the ciphertext. The two most popular types of encryption are symmetric encryption and asymmetric encryption.
